Black History Month is used as a time to reflect on important people and events throughout the history of the African diaspora. Whilst renowned Black leaders, icons and heroes are often placed at the centre of these conversations, we believe that it’s important to also honour the identities and personal narratives of the wider Black community.

To celebrate these everyday heroes and family stories, we’re proud to announce a creative project titled Your History is Black History. In collaboration with the creative collective SXWKS, we’re working with a group of inspiring Black talent, including Jess Lawrence, Nate Agbetu and Jahnavi Inniss, to celebrate the distinctive narratives, cultures and traditions of their own families and communities.

This will be conveyed through a denim tapestry comprised of their own individual patchworks. The group of talent designed and customized their own patchwork piece, as a medium to express to how their individual identity has been shaped by their own families, communities and heritage. The tapestry is made of upcycled Levi’s® denim, reinforcing the enduring use of our denim as a canvas for self-expression. Friends and family were also invited along to partake in the workshop; with their rich contributions further showcasing how Black history is family history.

Whilst Black History Month is used as a crucial period to reflect on the past, it’s also important to look ahead to the future.
